Valley - I addressed some of your concerns in this post http://www.happyvalleyhoops.com/?p=80

Also since three of the top five guys in the turnover category ranking are guards (Olrzerik, Moore, and Butler), empirical evidence would suggest that they aren't being penalized too heavily.

Rebounding is a category that definitely favors the front court but that's compensated by putting assists, which clearly favors back court players, into the scoring group.

All in all, since the end results seem to be consistent with what a random distribution would show, I don't think the formula is inherently biased for or against any position.

Aren't guards penalized by this formula? First, they handle the ball more, thus more likely to have turnovers? Unless you mitigate this by some percentage for the amount of time they have the ball, it puts them at a disadvantage. Second, they are also disadvantaged positionally and stature in the rebounding stat.

It's a bit surprising to see Morgan's name at the top of this list, but we MSU faithful have witnessed his potential going back to last season (when he was never completely healthy). He already has an NBA body and can do it all--score, rebound, defend. His only weakness this season is a propensity to turn the ball over and pick up a few a bad fouls. By the end of the season, my guess is that Morgan, rather than Neitzel, will be MSU's Big Ten Player of the Year candidate, as there's less need for Neitzel to shoot the ball 15 times per game this season.

Just discovered your site. Great work. I'm attempting to fill the Wonk's shoes, too--but from a Spartan perspective (www.spartansweblog.com). You're miles ahead of me in terms of the number crunching, though.

Cheers.
